Special Olympics Great Britain

sogb About

Special Olympics Great Britain is part of an international non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with learning disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.

Special Olympics is an unprecedented global movement which, through quality sports training and competition, improves the lives of people with learning disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch.

Inspired by her sister’s learning disability, Special Olympics International was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968 following an Olympic-style competition in Chicago’s Soldier Field. This event represented the first International Special Olympics Games with 1,000 athletes taking part from 26 states competing in athletics, floor hockey and aquatics.

2009 Should be remembered as an inspirational sporting achievement for Special Olympics Great Britain and as the largest multi-sports event of the year in Great Britain.  Over 2,400 learning disabled athletes from across Great Britain took part in the 8th Special Olympics National Summer Games in Leicester and also welcomed over 1,200 coaches, 6,000 families and more than 1,500 volunteers.

Special Olympics Great Britain was established in 1978 and currently serves over 8,000 athletes who take part in year-round sports training and competition programmes. SOGB is a registered charity, which currently receives no government funding.

Enham’s vision is a society where people with disabilities are valued as individuals and are enabled to achieve their full potential, with a person-centred approach to give each client the maximum personal choice. Over 3,000 disabled people access Enham’s services each year.
